Les Mayhew and David Smith of Cass Business school demonstrated their new human survival based technque for projecting populations. They showed how their method would have given much more accurate population projections over the period 1981 to 2001. They also showed that due to rises in male life expectancy the number of older people will be higher than expected even as soon as 2020 with significant policy implications for pensions, health and long term care.
